Chairman Dai Songlin Establishes "Helen Scholarship" to Support Rural Education

Sep 22, 2021

Hongchou, Tiantai County – At a grand ceremony held on the playground of Hongchou Middle School, Mr. Dai Songlin, Chairman of ZHEJIANG HELEN GARDEN CO., LTD. and a distinguished local philanthropist, fulfilled a 16-year dream by launching the inaugural "Helen Scholarship" to inspire academic excellence. Over 300 attendees, including school faculty, students, parents, and local officials, witnessed the heartfelt event.

A Dream Realized: Empowering Education
Chairman Dai shared, “Establishing the Helen Scholarship at my alma mater has been a goal since 2005. Back then, our company was still growing, and I hesitated to act. Today, I’m proud to turn this vision into reality.” The scholarship, funded entirely by Dai, allocates 30,000 yuan annually to reward top-performing students:
- First Prize (1 student per grade): 3,000 yuan
- Second Prize (2 students per grade): 2,000 yuan each
- Third Prize (3 students per grade): 1,000 yuan each

In addition, the existing "Community Elite Grant"—founded by Dai in 2017 to honor outstanding teachers—continues to thrive, with local benefactors competing yearly to fund it.
Education as a Catalyst for Change
Dai emphasized the critical role of education during his speech: “Hongchou’s early economic success overlooked education. Now, we must invest in knowledge to keep pace with the times.” Drawing from his own journey as a student, entrepreneur, and industry leader, he delivered an inspiring lecture, urging students to “aim higher” and pledging sustained support for rural education.

A Legacy of Giving Back
Beyond education, Dai’s philanthropy spans decades:
- Supporting Veterans: Since 2015, he has donated 500 yuan annually to each of Tiantai’s 46 surviving WWII veterans.
- Cultural Preservation: In 2020, he donated 300,000 yuan to restore the historic Hongchou Twin Pagodas, a cultural landmark dormant for 60 years.
- Community Welfare: He funds newspaper subscriptions for elderly villagers, aids disabled families, and partners with charities like the Women’s Federation and Volunteer Association.

Dai’s commitment earned him the “Outstanding Contributor to Poverty Alleviation” award from the China Democratic League Zhejiang Committee in 2021.
Roots of Compassion: A Father’s Influence
Dai attributes his passion for education to his father, a strict village teacher who served for nearly 20 years. “Teaching is the noblest profession,” his father often said. Growing up in an era where education was undervalued (“A calculator suffices for business; selling tea eggs trumps studying physics”), Dai witnessed firsthand how educational neglect hindered regional progress. Today, he champions scholarships, mentors students, and personally assists those in need—from funding eyeglasses for a struggling teen to covering university tuition for an aspiring lawyer.

A Message of Shared Responsibility
“True wealth lies in giving,” Dai remarked. “Helping students isn’t about grand gestures—it’s about igniting hope. If my support changes even one life, every effort is worthwhile.”
